Let's talk about lab water
Water, water, everywhere – as poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge once said. Perhaps he was referring to the fact that ultrapure water is used by researchers all around the world, working on projects across a whole range of scientific disciplines. Equally though, he may have been referring to the aftermath of a major laboratory plumbing disaster – not so great for those hard-working researchers.
Whether you’re looking to invest in a water purification system for a single laboratory or a whole building, you’ll want a robust and reliable set-up that meets the needs of its users and consistently delivers the grade of water that’s required. We’ve blogged previously about the state-of-the-art technology that’s packed into our PURELAB Chorus range, and how to match a system with the type of research you do. But there are several other points you should consider to ensure you end up with a convenient-to-use solution that you can depend on daily.
How often will you need to draw ultrapure water from your system? You’ll probably use more water in your lab than you think! An easy-to-use set-up with flexible, ergonomically-designed dispensing heads and a range of convenient flow options can make filling up glassware a great deal easier.
Think about your experiments. Are your applications sensitive to ionic or organic impurities? (Check out our handy infographic if you are unsure). If they are, it might be a good idea to monitor the resistivity or total organic carbon content of your lab water.
ELGA’s Halo and Flex dispensing solutions have built-in sensors to provide real-time information on the quality of your water as it dispenses. Our Halo range will even glow when there are changes in system performance, letting you know in good time when consumables need to be replaced. Way to glow!
Will you be serving one laboratory? A fleet of labs? Perhaps even an entire building? And how will each laboratory’s needs vary, both in terms of applications and volume required? Will this change in the future?
Whatever size of lab you’re fitting, there are a range of options we can use to build a system to meet your needs – from fully recirculating storage reservoirs that are modular in nature, through to multi-step systems that can take a supply pretreated elsewhere in the building and ‘polish’ it at the point of use.
Whatever set-up you opt for, make sure you ask whether it’s scalable, and can expand as your lab grows or your needs change. You can trust us when we say that nothing stays the same – we’ve been working with laboratory water for over 80 years!
Will your water purification system supplier provide hands-on training so that you’re well-equipped to quickly tackle routine issues or fit replacement parts yourself? What kind of after-sales service will they offer? And will they offer a bespoke maintenance package to meet the individual needs of your system? After all, no lab is the same, so why should your service contract be?
At ELGA, we’re here to support you throughout our relationship. We’ll listen to your needs, and can help you design a custom system that will truly meet your requirements. Our talented service engineers will install, validate, and continually maintain your equipment in accordance with the relevant regional standards. And our friendly local help desks are there to identify parts, offer troubleshooting tips, and provide open and honest advice.
